Today, I want to share with you one of my favorite bread recipes—Greek pita bread.

It pairs especially well with hummus, tzatziki sauce, and similar dips and spreads. And when wrapped around a gyro, it’s simply amazing.

Greek Pita Bread

Total Time 2 hours
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

Activate the Yeast:

  • To prepare the pita, add the yeast and sugar to warm water (the water should be warm enough that it slightly burns your hand). Sift in half a cup of flour and stir with a whisk. Place the mixture in a warm spot and let it rise for 15 minutes.

Make the Dough:

  • Once the mixture has risen, add olive oil, salt, and the remaining flour. Knead the dough until soft. Transfer the dough to a bowl greased with oil, brush a little oil on top of the dough to prevent it from drying out. Cover the bowl with a tea towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours.

Shape and Rest:

  • After the dough has risen, divide it into 8 equal parts and shape them into balls. Cover with a tea towel and let them rest for 10-15 minutes. Roll out each ball to a thickness of 4-5 mm.

Cook the Pita:

  • Heat a pan and cook the pita on both sides until slightly browned, about 3-4 minutes per side. Flip every 30 seconds. Your pita bread is ready to be served!
